Earthquakes are now occuring in parts of the world that do not normally have them, and they will increase all over the place as time goes on, so EVERYONE should read this and remember it.
These survival techniques are many times EXACTLY the opposite of what you have "always heard," so ammend your earthquake survival strategies accordingly.

What You Were Taught About Earthquakes Was Wrong
EXTRACT FROM DOUG COPP'S ARTICLE ON THE"TRIANGLE OF LIFE", Edited by LarryLinn for MAA Safety Committee brief on 4/13/04.
My name is Doug Copp. I am the Rescue Chief andDisaster Manager of theAmerican Rescue Team International (ARTI), theworld's most experiencedrescue team. The information in this article willsave lives in an earthquake.
I have crawled inside 875 collapsed buildings, worked with rescue teamsfrom 60 countries, founded rescue teams in severalcountries, and I am amember of many rescue teams from many countries. Iwas the United Nationsexpert in Disaster Mitigation (UNX051 -UNIENET) fortwo years. I have worked at every major disaster inthe world since 1985, except for simultaneousdisasters.
The first building I ever crawled inside of was aschool in Mexico Cityduring the 1985 earthquake. Every child was undertheir desk. Every childwas crushed to the thickness of their bones. Theycould have survived bylying down next to their desks in the aisles. Itwas obscene, unnecessaryand I wondered why the children were not in theaisles. I didn't at thetime know that the children were told to hide undersomething.
Simply stated, when buildings collapse, the weightof the ceilings fallingupon the objects or furniture inside crushes theseobjects, leaving a spaceor void next to them. This space is what I callthe" triangle of life". Thelarger the object, the stronger, the less it willcompact. The less theobject compacts, the larger the void, the greaterthe probability that theperson who is using this void for safety will notbe injured. The next timeyou watch collapsed buildings, on television, countthe "triangles" yousee formed. They are everywhere.
It is the most common shape, you will see, in acollapsed building. Theyare everywhere. I trained the Fire Department ofTrujillo (population 750,000) in how to survive, take care of their families, and to rescue othersin earthquakes.
The chief of rescue in the Trujillo Fire Departmentis a professor at Trujillo University. Heaccompanied me everywhere. He gave personaltestimony:
"My name is Roberto Rosales. I am Chief ofRescue in Trujillo. When I was11 years old, I was trapped inside of a collapsedbuilding. My entrapmentoccurred during the earthquake of 1972 that killed70,000 people. I survived in the "triangle oflife" that existed next to my brother'smotorcycle. My friends who got under the bed andunder desks were crushedto death [he gives more details, names, addressesetc.]...I am the livingexample of the "triangle of life". Mydead friends are the example of "duckand cover".
TIPS DOUG COPP PROVIDES:
1) Everyone who simply "ducks andcovers" WHEN BUILDINGS COLLAPSE is crushed todeath -- Every time, without exception. People whoget underobjects, like desks or cars, are always crushed.
2) Cats, dogs and babies all naturally oftencurl up in the fetal position. You should too in anearthquake. It is a natural safety/survivalinstinct. You can survive in a smaller void. Getnext to an object, next toa sofa, next to a large bulky object that willcompress slightly but leavea void next to it.
3) Wooden buildings are the safest type ofconstruction to be in during anearthquake. The reason is simple: the wood isflexible and moves with theforce of the earthquake. If the wooden buildingdoes collapse, large survival voids are created. Also, the wooden building hasless concentrated, crushing weight. Brickbuildings will break into individual bricks. Brickswill cause many injuries but less squashed bodiesthan concrete slabs.
4) If you are in bed during the night and anearthquake occurs, simplyroll off the bed. A safe void will exist around thebed. Hotels can achievea much greater survival rate in earthquakes, simplyby posting a sign onthe back of the door of every room, tellingoccupants to lie down on thefloor, next to the bottom of the bed during anearthquake.
5) If an earthquake happens while you arewatching television and you cannot easily escape bygetting out the door or window, then lie down andcurl up in the fetal position next to a sofa, orlarge chair.
6) Everybody who gets under a doorway when
buildings collapse is killed. How? If you standunder a doorway and thedoorjamb falls forward or backward you will becrushed by the ceiling above. If the door jam fallssideways you will be cut in half by the doorway. Ineither case, you will be killed!
7) Never go to the stairs. The stairs have adifferent "moment of frequency" (theyswing separately from the main part of the building).Thestairs and remainder of the building continuouslybump into each other until structural failure ofthe stairs takes place.
The people who get on stairs before they fail arechopped up by the stairtreads. They are horribly mutilated. Even if thebuilding doesn't collapse, stay away from the stairs. The stairs are a likelypart of the building tobe damaged. Even if the stairs are not collapsed bythe earthquake, theymay collapse later when overloaded by screaming, fleeing people. They should always be checked forsafety, even when the rest of the building isnot damaged.
8) Get Near the Outer Walls Of Buildings OrOutside Of Them If Possible -It is much better to be near the outside of thebuilding rather than theinterior. The farther inside you are from theoutside perimeter of the building the greater theprobability that your escape route will be blocked;
9) People inside of their vehicles arecrushed when the road above fallsin an earthquake and crushes their vehicles; whichis exactly what happenedwith the slabs between the decks of the NimitzFreeway. The victims of theSan Francisco earthquake all stayed inside of theirvehicles. They were allkilled. They could have easily survived by gettingout and sitting or lyingnext to their vehicles, says the author. Everyonekilled would have survived if they had been able toget out of their cars and sit or lie nextto them. All the crushed cars had voids 3 feet highnext to them, exceptfor the cars that had columns fall directly acrossthem
10) I discovered, while crawling insideof collapsed newspaper officesand other offices with a lot of paper, that paperdoes not compact. Largevoids are found surrounding stacks of paper.
